MODULE 3: Economy, Trade and Business (ETB) - Southeast Asia

Contents and topics of the course

The Southeast Asian countries are an interesting upcoming economic region in the world. This group of economies  feature great diversity - Singapore has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, while several of the mainland Southeast Asian states are among the poorest.

​

Four of the economies – Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand – grew extremely quickly in the three decades up to the Asian economic crisis in 1997. You will look into the economic success story of the Asian tiger Singapore and compare this to other Southeast Asian countries (Asian tiger cubs).

A particular focus will be on Thailand. You will get acquainted with the Thai business culture and how to start a business in Thailand. Specific Thai marketing strategies will be analyzed.

You will detect business opportunities and challenges by conducting a competitor analysis in the Thai market for your research project.


The course will also look at the trade relations between the Southeast Asian region (Thailand in particular) and the Netherlands, EU and the rest of the world.
