MODULE 5: Chinese Language Basics (CLB) - China

Contents and topics of the course

 

China is the second largest economy in the world and the world's fastest-growing major economy, with growth rates averaging 10% over the past 30 years. The Chinese language is the second widely-spoken language in the world. Learning Chinese is not only a study of Mandarin, but also a process of knowing Chinese culture. Speaking Chinese is an essential asset to start a business or career in China.

The general goals of learning Chinese are communication, connection and comparison. This course is an intensive course which is designed for beginners. Listening and speaking are stressed in this module. Phonetics-Pinyin is introduced at the beginning of the semester. Students can use the 'Romanised' Pinyin
(汉语拼音) as a self-study tool to enlarge their vocabulary for their further study.

 

With 200 words and the corresponding grammar, student can make dialogues on the following topics: greetings, numbers & money (bank), time & date, family & occupation, food (restaurant), shopping, body & sickness.
